Switching to an Electric Car?

Electric cars run on battery power as opposed to burning fossil fuels to turn the wheels. This allows for them to be vastly more environmentally friendly and efficient with the power. With the current environmental issues, switching to a zero-emission vehicle has a significant contribution towards helping he climate crisis, and the switch will eventually happen either way as the world runs out of fossil fuel to burn. There have been significant strides in the development of electric vehicle technology, and they are quite capable of satisfying most drivers’ daily requirements. The primary concerns on switching to an electric car is whether it would hold enough charge for a day’s commute, cost, availability of parts for service, and the availability of charging services. The improvements in electric car battery technology allows them to travel significantly longer distances than the initial models on a single charge. Maintenance of the car is a significant problem though, as electric vehicles have more intricate systems and often require specialised tools to repair. Most electric car manufacturers such as Tesla are also restrictive about allowing the owners to repair their owns vehicles which has become quite a controversial stance to take. Moreover, third party suppliers of spare parts may be substantially reduced with manufacturer restrictions on directly selling to customers. With older vehicles one could replace almost any part with parts manufactured by third parties, for example Redarc Tow Pro switch insert, whereas it may no longer be possible with newer cars. Charging station availability is a significant issue if one cannot charge at home but they are being built with increasing regularity, and most workplaces are starting to offer charging stations.


Modern electric cars can travel upwards of 300 km on a full charge. This is sufficient for almost every general-purpose user of a vehicle. This makes electric cars well suited for the daily workplace commute and since this is where most of the vehicular pollution comes from (owing to high traffic), electric vehicles are a sustainable solution for the future.


This is almost a non-issue if you have space at home to charge an electric vehicle. In the absence of this, it depends on the city and the expected distance travelled. Some cities are proactive in adopting electric vehicles and have publicly available charging stalls. Some cities have even stopped building new gasoline stations and have started to include an electric charging station in them.

Repair and Maintenance

This is a controversial issue when it comes to electric vehicle manufacturers as many of them are quite restrictive with the access to their hardware. The lack of third-party spare parts is a real concern for users in remote areas. Many activists are campaigning to preserve the right to repair but companies such as Tesla are actively lobbying against it. However, this is present in most modern cars regardless of whether they are electric, or fossil fuel powered, and the increased digitization of vehicle features allow manufacturers to add software locks that prevent owners from repairing their own cars.
